Das Brunnenhäuschen

Riesling wines are incredibly multifaceted and reflect in all their subtlety how they were grown and cultivated. Their origin, i.e. the soil and climate, shapes their aromas in a distinctive way.
Six years ago, we had the opportunity to take over a vineyard of approximately 8,000 m² in Westhofen's Brunnenhäuschen. This vineyard site is a small plot of around 13 hectares, bordering Morstein to the east, above the Steingrube site at around 200 meters. Even though Brunnenhäuschen faces purely south, the location still produces very late ripening. This is due to the altitude and exposure to the west wind, which keeps the temperature cool despite intense sunlight. The soils are characterized by clay marl with limestone, and even red terra rossa can be found there.
We cleared the old vineyard and planted Riesling clones from the Moselle and Chardonnay clones from Burgundy. Last year, we were able to vinify and bottle the first small yield. And although the vineyard is still in its infancy, the wine surprises with its complexity and length. We are very much looking forward to getting to know the Brunnenhäuschen and its wines even better over the coming decades.
